Braided Identities of the European and Caribbean Netherlands

In the European Netherlands, there is a serious lack of knowledge about the long history of diversity in society as a result of colonisation and migration. Even today, far too many of the images reproduced in education and the media create the impression of the European Netherlands as “white” and “mono-cultural”. With a view to shifting this emphasis, a large consortium of universities, colleges and community-based organisations will work for the next five years on the research programme Re/Presenting Europe: Popular Representations of Diversity and Belonging.

The Dutch Research Council (NWO) has made funding available for this purpose. The goal is to carry out research into popular cultural expressions such as sports and music. Education will also be a focus of research. What representations do we find of European residents and the European identity? In which instances do they contribute to stereotyping and when do they offer a realistic view? What heroes or positive role models do we know? How can this help us become a resilient society? The findings in the context of the European Netherlands will be compared to research on identity in other European countries, the United States and the Caribbean Netherlands. The transatlantic part of the research will be led by Francio Guadeloupe (University of Amsterdam) and Rachel Gillett (Utrecht University). Others involved are Manou Anselma (UMC Amsterdam and the Mulier Institute), Durwin Lynch (VU Amsterdam) and OCAN. On the islands, the programme’s partners include the University of Curaçao (Elizabeth Echteld, Percy Pineda), Le Thinnai Creole, the Fundashon Bon Intenshon Foundation and VSA Sint Maarten (Chantal Groeneveldt). Networks and co-creation groups will be formed, and outcomes will be shared in accessible ways, including as performances and graphic novels.
