Breaking Rules – European hiphop meeting
EventBreaking Rules galmt na
Tussen de 200 en 1000 mensen volgden op 11 en 12 september de Europese hiphopconferentie Breaking Rules online via livestream en zoom-sessies. Bevlogen talks en performances van o.a. Redo, Dieuwertje Heuvelings, Francio Guadeloupe en Akwasi vonden veel weerklank. Zowel ervaren hotshots uit de hiphopscene als kersverse studenten waren het erover eens: we moeten verbinden en ideeën uitwisselen om verder te bouwen aan de kennis over hiphop. I AM REDO, an internationally renowned dancer and inspiring keynote speaker, talked about how hip hop and break dance have impacted his life and how he tries to transfer his knowledge on hip hop to younger generations.

Diewertje Heuvelings spoke about her experiences and involvement in the Dutch hip hop scene and the music industry. She focused on the role of streaming service Spotify. Her concerns are for the future: ‘what’s next?’ What will hip hop mean for the youngest generation?

Francio Guadeloupe spoke about transcultural youthnicity: a mode of ethnic belonging grounded in youthful openness rather than ethnic exclusivity. People who belong to this youthnicity use hip hop, and other forms of urban popular culture, to promote an alternative anti-racist way of conceiving the Netherlands.

Breaking Rules – 11 & 12 september 2020
De line-up bestaat uit een mix van internationale hiphop onderzoekers, hiphop artiesten, graffiti specialisten en urban culture experts. Zoals: Ian Solomon-Kawall, Gregor Bulc en Dieuwertje Heuvelings. Er zijn Artist Talks – over de rol van hiphop in hun leven en hoe zij jongeren daarmee inspireren – van bboy Redo, rapper Akwasi en straatvoetballer Rocky. Allemaal te volgen via livestream.
Verder zijn er sessies over onderzoek naar hiphop, zowel offline als online. Maak kennis met 12 jonge Nederlandse onderzoekers die een sterke relatie hebben met de scene, beleef een somethin’ out of nothin’ sessie of analysis in the moment van hiphop tracks, praat mee over feminisme in hiphop of issues als (non)belonging. Levendige interactieve sessies waarbij het publiek ook zijn kennis deelt. Onderzoek en praktijk gaan elkaar op deze dagen versterken!
LKCA is samen met EHHSN organisator van deze netwerkbijeenkomst, die plaatsvindt tijdens het Rotterdam Street Culture Weekend. De bijeenkomst zal voornamelijk in het Engels zijn.

In verband met het coronavirus zijn verschillende maatregelen getroffen om het evenement veilig te laten plaatsvinden. Voor deelnemers op locatie in Rotterdam is het van belang dat zij de Factsheet Breaking Rules Covid-19 goed doornemen. Deze zal ook op locatie worden verstrekt.
Breaking Rules – European Hip Hop Meeting
On September 11th and 12th, 2020 the third edition of the European Hip Hop Studies Network Meeting will take place – live and online – in the Netherlands for the first time. And hip hop city Rotterdam will be hosting it. We want you to be there and join the conversation!
The line-up will be a mix of international hip hop scholars, hip hop artists, graffiti specialists and urban culture experts. Such as: Ian Solomon-Kawall, Gregor Bulc and Dieuwertje Heuvelings. There will be Artist Talks – by bboy break dancer Redo, rapper Akwasi, and street soccer specialist Rocky – on the impact of hip hop on their lives and how they use this impact to inspire youth. These sessions will be live streamed online.
In addition, there will be sessions on hip hop studies, online and offline. For instance: get to know 12 young Dutch hip hop scholars who are grounded in the hip hop and academic community, experience a somethin’-out-of-nothin’ session or an in the moment analysis of hip hop tracks, get involved in a discussion on feminism in hip hop or share your thoughts on issues of belonging and non-belonging in hip hop.
In short: a wide array of lively interactive sessions in which the audience’s participation and knowledge is indispensable. Feel free to join, feel free to share your thoughts, so that research on hip hop and its real life practice can reinforce each other.
This network meeting is organized by LKCA in cooperation with EHHSN and will take place during the Rotterdam Street Culture Weekend. The main language used in the meeting will be English.
